When to Replace Pool Filter Cartridges

pool filterChanging your pool filter cartridge is one of the most critical pool maintenance chores. Unfortunately, there’s no gauge, instrument, or warning light/sound that comes on to remind you that your filter cartridge is due for replacement.

Swimming pool sanitation is a task that you want to research well when you have your own pool.  Scheduling regular and professional pool cleaning through Sun Valley is a great way to extend the life of your pool and your pool filter.

Additionally, most pool filter cartridges have no expiration date, so knowing when your filter needs to be replaced can seem like a daunting challenge.

However, there are a couple of signs to take note of so you’ll definitely know when it’s time to replace your pool filter cartridge. Scroll down to learn more!

Broken band

The first time you see a crack in the band does not necessarily mean it’s time to replace the filter with a new one. Filter bands are designed to keep the spacing between the pleats of the filter consistent.

A pool filter with a broken band will still filter the water, but the level of filtering will be reduced.  Some filter bands will get cracks and still work just fine for many years.

Once you start seeing cracks, pay attention to the water.  If the water becomes green or cloudy, you’ll need to replace the filter.  If the water is still clear, the filter is still working.

Defective filter pleat

The second way of determining the need for a new pool filter is to inspect it thoroughly every time you clean between its pleats. If you notice that the material has degraded or is starting to fray or the pleats are flattening, then know that it’s time to replace the cartridge filter.

To extend the life of your pool filter, it’s more important to use water clarifiers and add an oil-absorbing sponge to reduce the risk of clogging.

The color of the cartridge

The color of the pool filter can also tell you about its condition.  When you first install the filter, it will be very white.  This white color will lessen over time, but it will still work well.

The presence of oil or brown stains on the cartridge indicates that your pool filter is due for a replacement.  It’s a good idea to use a cartridge cleaner solution every few weeks to help pull the oils and stains out.

Some debris on the filter is actually helpful though.  Because those pieces of leaves or dirt will help to collect more dirt and debris.

Water quality

Another strong indicator that your pool filter cartridge needs a replacement, is when you notice that the pool water stays green or cloudy despite applying algae bloom treatment.

Scheduling regular pool maintenance is a great way to keep your pool clean and clear all year long.

A filter cartridge that’s needs to be replaced will force you to run the pump for more hours or use an excessive amount of chemicals to achieve clean and clear pool water.

Broken end caps

Another indicator that your cartridge filter has reached the end of its lifespan, is when its end caps develop cracks. Replace the filter when you notice broken end caps.

Abnormal filter pressures

Replace your pool filter cartridge if the filter pressure gauge is above the normal operating pressure.  All pools are different and there is not a set psi for any pool.

Usually anywhere between 10-25 psi is considered normal.  If you’re not sure what the ideal number is for your pool, contact Sun Valley today.

Generally speaking when the psi is 10 psi higher than normal, it is time to clean the filter.  If the pressure does not go back down to the normal range after you have cleaned the filter, it is time to replace it.
